Whether you’re trying to prevent or control diabetes, your nutritional needs are just as same as everyone else; no special diet is necessary. However, you do need to eat smart and watch most notably the carbohydrates you eat. The most important thing you can also do is to lose a little weight.
If you are overweight (nothing to be ashamed of!), then avoiding the obvious foods that contain saturated fats/salt and refined sugars is of utmost importance, as is a balanced diet with a wide variety of ‘above ground’ vegetables, dairy produce, fresh fruits, nuts, berries, oily fish and lean meats such as chicken or turkey. It is wise to watch portion sizes, and a smaller plate often helps, as does regular sensible exercise.
